Agent 99 - Online story telling

So I sent in a script to the Writer's room - spur of the moment really. I was feeling pretty good about this film - after all it is in good enough shape to attract a producer and director, and it contains my best film writing. Actually I would go further and say this is the script in which I found my visual story telling style.

Last week I got the 'we like it send us the next one' letter with a one page critique as well. I would think this a success - they noticed, they liked it, they'll read the next. But reading the critique I realise I had made a horrible mistake...

After giving it some good positive comments they then proceeded to point out three or four things that thought could be better. The tragedy was I know about these three or four things - in fact I am waiting for some development money (my first!) to fix them.

So why the frak didn't I wait until it was another draft along before sending it in?!?!?!?

Dear reader.... that's what I should have done, but I am ashamed to say that I got a bit excited by my own potential. So here's today's lesson...

DON"T SEND THE BBC A SCRIPT WITH POTENTIAL - SEND THEM THE FINISHED ITEM.

This is hard because we do get excited when something goes well and we all want to get along, to show that we really can write, that the 15 years so far (gulp) has meant something. But the stressed and underpaid reader doesn't (and shouldn't) care about that, they just want a great read... It's also hard because writing involves passion, but this is todays lesson, it also involves strategic cleverness and a cool head.
