Animus

The male qualities as encountered by the female character - the inverse relation to Anima.

A balanced self - and Hero - contains the masculine and feminine drives. The female Hero must encounter and integrate the masculine traits of courage, leadership, strength.

There aren't many female heroes in the Western tradition, so the female encounter with the Animus is not explored enough. In the newer types of movies with a fully-featured female hero they tend to duck the issue by being stereotypically masculine (Tomb Raider). However there are examples of a female leads who integrate masculine traits to flourish (Silkwood, Million Dollar Baby). However Ibsen's A Dolls House is probably one of the best examples of a woman integrating her Animus and taking charge.
